Sobering Statistics: Project Management

Did you know? Failed Projects

Some Facts and Figures

One of the most respected and referenced companies reporting on software projects is the Standish Group. Their CHAOS report is used by organizations all over the world. They measure success as projects that are on budget, on time, and meet expected functionality. Only 32% of projects meet that criteria and are considered Successful.

The 2004 CHAOS report found that a staggering $55 Billion annually is lost to failed projects and the 2009 report found:

Successful Projects: 32%

Challenged Projects: 44%

Failed Projects: 24%

The key reasons Standish gives for failure (in order of most detrimental):

  • Lack of User Input
  • Incomplete Requirements and Specifications
  • Changing Requirements and Specifications
  • Lack of Executive Support
  • Technology and Team Incompetence
  • Lack of Resources
  • Unrealistic Expectations
  • Unclear Objectives
  • Unrealistic Time Frames
  • New Technology

We have experience working with many companies on projects that were challenged and destined for failure for many reasons, including:

  • Using a relative because it was cheaper or they felt they could work better with them
  • Outsourced overseas and unable to communicate the requirements clearly or contain costs
  • Using the wrong development methodology, such as Waterfall model (sequential), when Agile model (iterative) was a better fit
  • Mixing too many disparate technologies
  • Trying to develop in-house when it is not their core business
  • Using one person vs. a team that shares experiences and ideas
  • Lack of unit testing of the individual parts or modules of the application
  • Assuming a good developer in one language can easily transition to another
  • Failure to understand the business for which the application is being created
